Parental Leave Deferment

To defer repayment for your loan(s) while you are on parental leave, you must:

  • Be pregnant, caring for your newborn child, or caring for your newly adopted child
  • Not be working full-time (at least 30 hours per week in a position expected to last at least three months) or attending school during this deferment period, and
  • Have been enrolled in school at least half-time during the six months preceding this deferment (an authorized school official must certify the appropriate section on the Family Deferment Request Form)

You must provide your lender or servicer with:

  • A statement from your physician documenting your pregnancy if you are requesting this deferment due to your pregnancy, or
  • A copy of your newborn child's birth certificate, or
  • A statement from the adoption agency documenting your newly adopted child's placement
