12 Arizona Students, 1 High School Counselor Receive Scholarships and Cash Awards from Southwest Student Services Corporation During National Scholarship Month in May

GILBERT, Ariz., July 27, 2004 - May was National Scholarship Month, and twelve high school seniors and college students from around Arizona received scholarships totaling $10,000 from Southwest Student Services Corporation (Southwest), a nationally recognized higher education lender headquartered in Gilbert.

The scholarships represent Southwest’s commitment to awarding more than $25,000 annually in scholarships to help offset the rising cost of attending college and to reward students for outstanding academic performance and community involvement. Over the last decade, Arizona residents have received more than $175,000 in scholarships from Southwest.

"Each year, the scholarships awarded by Southwest help Arizona students pursue their dreams of receiving a college education," said Vince Roig, Chairman and CEO of Southwest Student Services Corporation. "Southwest is committed to helping families and students throughout Arizona and across the nation with education resources and financing that can make going to college a reality. It is a genuine pleasure to award these scholarships each spring and to recognize the achievements of these deserving counselors and students."

2004 Scholarship and Award recipients are:

  • Southwest’s High School Counselor of the Year Award: - Brian Corrigan, a counselor at Amphitheater High School, in Tucson, received a $500 cash prize and an award plaque after being named Southwest’s Arizona High School Counselor of the Year. His hard work and dedication, demonstrated through innovation, leadership and mentoring skills helped students realize their full career and education potential. Ashlee Jones, a senior at Amphitheater, received a $500 scholarship for nominating Corrigan.

  • Community College Scholarships: Four renewable $500 scholarships were awarded to Arizona high school seniors with strong service and academic backgrounds.

    • Susan Garcia, of Nogales High School and a resident of Rio Rico, plans to attend Pima Community College
    • Marelis Vásquez Rivera, of Cibola High School and a resident of Yuma, plans to attend Arizona Western College
    • Rosemary Smith of Red Mountain High School and a resident of Mesa, plans to attend Scottsdale Community College
    • Lewis Talkalai Talgo, of San Carlos High School and a resident of San Carlos, plans to attend Pima Community College

  • The Anne Lindeman Memorial Scholarship: Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to undergraduate seniors pursuing a course of study in Education, Social Sciences or Health Sciences. This scholarship memorializes the philosophy and accomplishments of Anne Lindeman, the former Executive Director of the Governor’s Council on Aging and a former Arizona state legislator, who fought to improve education as well as the quality of life for seniors. Lindeman, a former Southwest board member, also chaired the Arizona State Senate Education Committee and was instrumental in the effort to make ASU West a reality.
    This year’s recipients include:

    • Amanda Trujillo, a resident of Flagstaff and a senior at Northern Arizona University studying Nursing and specializing in Critical Care
    • Olga Tovar, a resident of Peoria and a junior at Arizona State University West studying Elementary Education with a Bilingual Education Endorsement
    • Frida Espinosa, a resident of Tucson and a senior at University of Arizona studying Social Sciences through Arizona International College

  • The J. Wilmer Mirandon Scholarship: Four $1,000 Mirandon Scholarships are awarded annually to college juniors at Arizona’s three public universities who have an interest in pursuing a career in business or education, and who have a track record of leadership and superior academic standing. The awarding universities selected the students receiving these scholarships, which are funded through Southwest.

    • Carla Anderson, a resident of Sun City and a student at NAU majoring in Accounting
    • Kim Bui, a resident of Tucson and a student at University of Arizona majoring in Finance
    • Tiffany Wear, a resident of Chino Valley and a student at Arizona State University majoring in Economics
    • Arthur Whipple, a resident of Glendale and a student at Arizona State University West majoring in accounting
